HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL
Heartland Christian Academy High School
Biblically Based Teaching
Large group Bible/Apologetics classes will be offered daily along with an individualized class schedule for each student utilizing both online courses from iLumened as well as in-class teaching. All classes will have foundations in Biblical truth.
Strong Academic Base
We believe that students need to be well prepared for life on this earth and that includes being prepared for future education options and job opportunities. The HCA hybrid model will allow for both large group learning opportunities as well as online courses that can cater to each individual student. Online courses will be offered through iLumened. HCA High will follow Minnesota State grad standards while making sure students are prepared for whatever education plans are in their future.
Middle and High Schoolers can participate in all ISD 31 sports!
The new High School will be utilizing the Valley View building located on the Oak Hills Christian College campus. (1600 Oak Hills Road SW Bemidji, MN 56601) Oak Hills has a beautiful 185 acre campus located on the shores of Lake Marquette. The Valley View building offers a completely separate environment from the college while still allowing students to utilize different aspects available on the campus. Imagine classes while looking out at the beautiful lakeshore!
Our goal is to help and encourage students to develop their personal leadership skills; equipping them for a life of service to their Savior, homes, churches, vocations and communities. This will be done in a variety of ways including classroom teaching, field trips, service and more.

Tom Johnston- Assistant Principal for High School Operations
Greetings families of Heartland Christian High School,
Thank you for your participation in the excellent Christian education provided by Heartland Christian High School. It is my privilege to serve as your new Vice Principal and to build upon the good foundation laid by Ekren Miller. My reason for writing this email is to introduce myself to you.
I was born in Paris, France, to missionary parents, the fourth of five children. About half of my elementary education was in French public schools. The other half was divided between U.S. schools and the American School of Paris. The Lord led me to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ while in France. I was baptized by my father at 13 years old. My family returned to the States where I attended Deerfield High School (Deerfield, Illinois)--and enjoyed all four years at one school. I played football and wrestled while in high school--and during most of college.
Assistant Principal for High School Operations
I continued my education at Wheaton College, starting out as a Chemistry-Bible Double Major. Between my sophomore and junior year, I worked as a garbageman and was injured in a train-truck collision. It shook me out of spiritual lethargy. In the spring of my junior year I dropped the Chemistry Major and went straight Bible. My senior year I asked Christ to help me follow Him with the same level of effort that I put into football and wrestling. It was then that I took Matthew 10:39 as my life verse: "He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it."
God led me to attend Trinity Evangelical Divinity School after college, where I met my beautiful bride, Raschelle (née Michalicek). After seminary, Raschelle (8 months pregnant) and I moved to Quebec-City, Quebec for me to teach at a fledgling French Bible school. Two of our three children were born in Quebec-City. Our youngest son was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where I pastored an Evangelical Free Church. Since these early years I have pastored several churches, completed a Ph.D., and taught for 20+ years at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Kansas City, Missouri), where I hold the title of Senior Professor of Evangelism. We have three married children and as of this year eight grandchildren--living in Orlando, Florida, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Atlanta, Georgia.
Early retirement due to Covid changed our comfortable lives in Kansas City. We began investigating missionary work in West Africa--where I planned to teach Bible classes in French. However, the Lord confirmed that we should move to Bemidji so that my wife could be closer to her mom to help with her declining health. That brings us here near you :-)
It is my goal to foster a warm and inviting educational atmosphere at Heartland Christian High School. One that includes study, spiritual encouragement, and laughter. Raschelle and I take it as our mission to pour into the students that come our way. We want to invite you into our home and include fun activities throughout the year.
My hobbies include playing the guitar and gardening with my wife. My addiction is hand-copying the Scriptures in French and Greek. Raschelle loves knitting, gardening, cooking, and painting.
We look forward to getting to know you and working with you this coming year.
Thank you for letting us into your lives,
Tom and Raschelle Johnston.
