HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL
Heartland Christian Academy High School
Biblically Based Teaching
Large group apologetics classes will be offered daily along with an individualized class schedule for each student utilizing both online courses from Northstar Academy as well as in class teaching. All classes will have foundations in Biblical truth.
Strong Academic Base
We believe that students need to be well prepared for life on this earth and that includes being prepared for future education options and job opportunities. The HCA hybrid model will allow for both large group learning opportunities as well as online courses that can cater to each individual student. Online courses will be offered through Northstar Online. HCA High will follow Minnesota State grad standards while making sure students are prepared for whatever education plans are in their future.
Our goal is to help and encourage students to develop their personal leadership skills; equipping them for a life of service to their Savior, homes, churches, vocations and communities. This will be done in a variety of ways including classroom teaching, field trips, service and more.
The new High School will be utilizing the Valley View building located on the Oak Hills Christian College campus. (1600 Oak Hills Road SW Bemidji, MN 56601) Oak Hills has a beautiful 185 acre campus located on the shores of Lake Marquette. The Valley View building offers a completely separate environment from the college while still allowing students to utilize different aspects available on the campus. Imagine classes while looking out at the beautiful lakeshore!

Jon Ness - Principal
Hello Heartland Family, For those of you who have not met me, my name is Jon Ness. I am first of all a chosen child of God. I am a husband to my amazing wife Cindy and we have 6 kids of our own. We run two businesses and also do foster care for highly addicted babies. Last year I was given the privilege to be the Principal at Heartland Christian Academy, prior to that I was a teacher for children with emotional and behavioral disabilities for 25 years. I have had the pleasure to work with students of all ages. During my career I have taught at every grade level. I went to school to be a Kindergarten teacher and ended up teaching high school special education. I have a B.S. in Early Childhood Education with a Special Education K-12 Licensure. I also have a K-12 coaching certification. If you are curious stop by the school some time for a cup of coffee and I'll tell you all about it.
I am incredibly excited to see what God has in store for the 2020 -21 school year at Heartland High School. We have been blessed with incredible staff members who are on fire for God and on fire for educating your students. I would truly like to thank you for allowing us to be a part of your student's life. We are excited to have the opportunity to teach a rigorous curriculum with a Biblical worldview.
Ekren Miller -
Assistant Principal for High School Operations
I was born in California and grew up in Bemidji. I came to Christ while studying at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, England in 2000. In 2002 I spent 6 months in Venezuela on independent study and church plant with TEAM. I graduated from Bemidji State University (BSU) in 2003, double majoring with a B.A. magna cum laude in Spanish and Philosophy. God called me to the People's Republic of China with ELIC for four years, 2004-2008, teaching Oral and Business English at Hengyang Normal University in Hunan Province. I also spent a year in Uyghur study in NW China. During that time in China I earned an M.A. from Wheaton College in Intercultural Studies.
Upon getting married to Kari Kantack in 2010 I was appointed Head Men's Golf Coach at BSU. I also have taught Spanish (K-12 licensure) and Mandarin Chinese Language and Culture at Trek North Jr. and Sr. High School since 2010, including AP Spanish. My Strengthfinder 2.0 strengths are: Learner, Achiever, Intellection, Input, Ideation. What do I do for fun? Golf, fishing, hunting, travel (not now), workouts, playing drums, and my new found hobby of making maple syrup.
I am excited about Heartland Christian High School as a need for our community to see God-honoring high school curriculum. It will be amazing to see what God can do when people step out in faith and obedience--staff and students alike! With the lead of the Holy Spirit, let's launch this school!
Dan Bryant - Volunteer Apologetics Instructor
I earned my first undergraduate degree from Trinity College (Renamed Trinity International University) in Deerfield, Illinois in 1981 with a Social Sciences Divisional Degree. I worked as a Production Planner and Cost Estimator for Meyers Printing for two years and realized how much I missed learning. I recognized teaching would allow me to serve others and share my enthusiasm for learning. I returned to school and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1986 with a second bachelor's degree in Social Studies Education. I acquired a State Coaching License from Hamline University in 1986 as well. I received a Masters degree in Social Studies Education with an emphasis in History in 1992 from Bemidji State University.
I taught for 31 years at Bemidji High School. My primary teaching assignments were A.P. U.S. History, Civics, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, and Comparative World Religions. I also coached MSHSL Lincoln Douglas Debate, Mock Trial, Cross Country Skiing and coached both boys and girls soccer teams through the high school and summer league programs for 16 years.
I have a great interest in Christian Apologetics and Logic. I find both academic disciplines immensely faith building. I have found the writings of C.S. Lewis, Ravi Zacharias, G.K. Chesterton, Philip Yancey, William Lane Craig, Peter Kreeft, John Lennox and many others exceptionally helpful. I am sincerely looking forward to assisting students in understanding the rationality of their faith in our God, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe.
