Heartland Christian Academy was founded in 1980 by some very brave and spirit-led people who felt that a non-denominational school was needed and part of God’s plan for the Bemidji area. It was a tremendous leap of faith, but through many, many prayers and asking for God’s help and guidance, Heartland Christian Academy opened its doors.
The first school year in 1980 was an exciting one. Classes were held at the Bemidji Armory during that time. A perfect, beautiful little chunk of land was donated to Heartland and the next task was setting about building. God provided the supplies, the people and the sweat equity! Heartland’s main building was built almost entirely by volunteers who donated their many hours of hard work to the cause.
As most building projects go, there were hurdles that had to be jumped along the way. Once, a major storm system threatened the area during a critical building phase and although the surrounding area was battered by the storm, the clouds parted above Heartland. God was faithful to see that every detail was accounted for. It was an exciting time!
The main building stands strong today and there was also an addition to the school along the way. Now there is more space for our music classroom and a beautiful new library just added in 2013.
Over the years, Heartland Christian Academy has hosted different students, teachers, staff and board members. It is a wonderful thing to think of all of the lives that have been touched by our school since 1980. But one thing remains the same: God always provides and has always been faithful to the Heartland community. We are so thankful to Him for how far we have come and we are so excited about what is coming in the future!
